Desde los iniciales intentos de los pintores por retratar fielmente al modelo, hasta la imposibilidad de la fotografía de conseguir un reflejo fiel a la realidad. Los intentos contrarios de unos por retratar, y otros por crear una imagen de sí, se oponen durante toda la historia. Partiquino, con un poco de humor, recuerda al lector cómo el insaciable ego de cada uno y cada una, ha perseverado por recrear en una imagen la idealizada mirada que se tiene de uno mismo, y cómo frente a la dificultad de conseguirlo, todos solemos frustrarnos.
